CNN is in the business of communicating information to the public. I just found this fairly lousy graphic on their political homepage, and in my opinion all those washed out yellows keep it from communicating much of anything. We’re fans of CNN at the moment, but this graphic (and so many of the other tables and graphics that are coming out of primary season) got me thinking about the way we display data and ideas.
Ironically, my time on CNN.com (and now my time tumbling about it) are really just procrastination techniques. I’m supposed to be writing my ThoughtWorks profile, summarizing the client work that I’ve done over the past 5 years. It’s a boring and difficult to read laundry list. Surely a “designer” like me should be able to come up with a better solution.
I’m headed to the Interaction Design conference in Savannah this weekend. I’m looking forward to the warm weather and hopefully a bit of learning and inspiration. Maybe I should bring Edward Tufte’s book on the airplane and pass it along to any CNN’ers that might be at the conference as well…
